The Guildford Lions 44th Annual Charity Raft Race took place in glorious sunshine on Saturday 1st July. We had a bumper entry of nearly 30 rafts and the event was enthusiastically supported by big crowds who followed the rafts along the route from Millmead to the Waterside Centre, Stoughton.
The race was started by the Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Nigel Manning who observed the fun from the National Trust launch along with Deric Quaile, President of Guildford Lions Club.
This was also a Guildford Borough Council Summer Festival event and the Lions were pleased to organise this fun spectacle which was enjoyed by hundreds of Guildford people. The event owes its success to the support of many organisations and sponsors including – Enterprise rent-a-car, Wickes, and Big Yellow Storage. The Weyside and Britannia pubs donated vouchers as prizes.
The race cannot take place without the help and support of the National Trust, the Sea Cadets, Guildford Borough Council, St John's Ambulance and obviously the rafters themselves. But most of all the fantastic support of the local community. Our thanks also to Harry Wickens, Official Photographer for the event.
About £5.000 has been raised for local, national and international charities.
