The Hedger’s Almshouses in Merrow are based in a quiet corner of the village where residents can live with the help of a Warden to look out for them. Built in the 1960s the residents have been short of a communal place to meet and enjoy each other’s company.
Guildford Lions Club have been involved with the Almhouses for many years transporting residents to afternoon boat trips along the River Wey, to our OAP Party which is held in Shalford Village Hall each year, and ensuring they each receive a Christmas goody bag or shopping voucher.
Now a new Garden Room has been installed so they can enjoy their secluded location and meet together as a community, and Guildford Lions Cub has been pleased to make a donation towards the building and equipping the new room.

Recently Lion Vic Quayle and 1st VP Geoff Sheldon were pleased to represent the club at the opening of a new Garden Room provided for the residents, just around the corner from Vic’s house in Wykeham Road, on Saturday 24 August. The Club donated £1,000 toward the £30,000 cost of building the room which is now available for the residents.
After a run of very hot days sadly the opening was marred by heavy rain, but the small crowd applauded the cutting of the obligatory ribbon and then enjoyed light refreshments.

The new room is for community use so the Club could use it for Committee meetings if necessary.
